Milonga El Abrazo de Gainesville this Saturday Aug 12, 2017 8:00 pm at our *NEW* Venue!!!

Thank you to every one who supported us last month at our ***NEW*** venue at the beautifully newly renovated Rosa B Williams 352artspace. We are now an affiliated group with the City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural affairs. (Support provided by the City of Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department – a CAPRA accredited agency.)

We have a great new wood floor, good lighting, security and free parking on the street. We also have parking passes for the lot across the street. And there are other lots being arranged for in the near future.

This event will be 3 hours long, but it may be possible to go longer into the evening in the future after we have some track record with the City.

Regular Programming this month:

8:00 to 8:30 Beginners Milonga (Experienced dancers welcome! 30 minute beginners lesson + 15 minutes dancing rotating partners after every song where we want to be sure to get all the beginners out on the floor with experienced dancers.)

8:45 to 11:00 Standard Tandas (Beginners encouraged to stay and dance and socialize and be exposed to the different orchestras and styles of Tango, Vals and Milonga music!)

What is a Beginners Milonga?

A 30 minute lesson followed by dancing for new tango dancers.

In its simplest form, Argentine Tango is just a hug and a walk to the music. Later you can add some other fancy stuff.

This is an opportunity to enjoy a real Argentine Tango Milonga (dance social). Put what you are learning to use in a welcoming atmosphere arranged to make new tango dancers feel comfortable.

Beginners are encouraged to stay after the Beginner’s Milonga to dance, hang out, watch and listen to music and meet new friends.

Experienced dancers are welcome at the Beginner’s Milonga.

The rules are:

Do not tell your partner what to do during the Beginner’s Milonga.

If you have trouble, ask the instructor for help, otherwise figure it out yourself.

Only ask your partner to do something if you are uncomfortable, not if you or they are confused.

This Month:

1. Lesson 8:00 – 8:30 with El Stevito.

2. Beginner’s Milonga 8:30 – 8:45. (Beginners rotate partners every song for the first 15 minutes.)

Jorge & Anabel Tango Workshops, Milonga & Show in Gainesville FL May 13-14, 2017

Screen Shot 2017-04-16 at 11.40.20 PM
Argentine Tango Workshops with Jorge Mendoza & Anabel Saldaña Martinez

(Full Bios at the end of this page.)

Coming to Gainesville on Saturday & Sunday May 13-14, 2017!

Presented by DJ El Stevito & Milonga El Abrazo de Gainesville

4 Signature Workshops, 1 Milonga + Show, 1 Pre-Milonga Class,
Private Lesson Reservations Available

We welcome an exciting new young couple from Buenos Aires. Thuy discovered Jorge’s talent–his clear concepts, his keen sense of how the body works and his genuine passion for the teaching of technique on her trip to Buenos Aires in October 2016.

Now Thuy’s friends in Gainesville and additional Florida towns can benefit from his teaching, as she did.

These workshops will concentrate intensively on the smaller details–the “hows,” the “whys,” the “how does it feels”–of social dancing elements (how posture comes about, what happens in the act of embracing, what are the actions of walking–and what are the effects that one “lets them happen,” what is a better understanding of “disassociation,” and the miraculous feeling and ease of “body axis.”) You will have a lot of material to take with you for the rest of your life.

By the way, it is a good idea to reserve your private lesson slots early. Contact Thuy Carroll to secure your spot!

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Jorge is an excellent social dancer–although he dances stage tango, he is a relatively more natural tanguero who feels things precisely and analyzes them in his body. His experience in dancing folklore from a young age helps him to be very grounded as a dancer.

Jorge was a Professor of Dance at Instituto Universitario Nacional de Artes, and he takes his teaching very seriously—he has the ability to explain how to let the things happen in the body that make the tango movement what it is. Although he performs and teaches in many venues in Buenos Aires he is a prolific social dancer and one of the preferred invitees at private house milongas.

Anabel was initially trained in Ballet dance, taking complementary subjects such as contemporary dance, folklore, staging and flamenco. She also teaches women’s classes in how to lead.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

“These workshops involve what we consider a progressive work of techniques to achieve a true connection. Each lesson is theoretical and practical therefore the dynamics is fundamental. Before the first class we would like to give people a brief interview about why they dance tango and what they feel when they dance it. In this way students will have confidence and participate by giving their opinions and conclusions. So naturally they will be decoding and deciphering every proposal, image or exercise.” ~ Jorge Mendoza
